The new website is almost ready!

Natasha and I have spent a very long time working on getting a new website going. It has been quite a journey, but we are finally getting close to having a functioning website where you can actually buy an antique print, map or artwork.

It all started with the persistent requests of our loyal customers asking us to create a website with some items they could buy in between our shows. A great idea, but how do you make a website? Natasha had created a few webpages and a very nice site where one could follow our show schedule and see our happy faces.

Then we bought a book that promised to reduce our work load. It was a book about work efficiency called "The 4-Hour Workweek" by Tim Ferriss in which it was suggested we outsource the website development. So we did and we were certainly going to spend more than 4 hours a week on this project...

We interviewed a great deal of web developers, some in Eastern Europe, a few in the Philippines and many in South Asia, mainly India and Pakistan. Ever so frugal we opted for a lad in Pakistan who promised us the world, his name was Shazad. Two months later Shazad gave us a website with an ugly presentation and a website full of bugs. We fired him.

It seemed that a bigger company was required so we tried our luck with another kind gentleman by the name of Puneet. With a twelve hour time difference we often found Puneet laying on his bed video conferencing with us about the in and outs of our future website. It was going to be a gem.

However, with every day, week and then months that passed we were very slowly coming to have a functioning website although full of bugs and a presentation that was prehistoric by web standards. Having spent a fairly large sum of money we were not ready to let Puneet and Co in India go and fire him. There was a small detail that did bring us to do just that: fire him. He could not program us a shopping cart!

We had no way to sell our products, all 2500 of them, which we took pictures of, uploaded and wrote descriptions of. We were back to square one and decided to go "local". We hired Jim, another gentleman, this time from South Carolina. He promised us a quick fix, but disappeared with the deposit.

Never abandoning a project. Natasha and I went against all the recommendations of our famous 4-hour Workweek book and contracted a very local company: right here in Santa Fe. Within 2 months from the signature of the contract we have a new website and it works. Not a single bug. The cost was a third of our amigo in India, Puneet, and it looks professional.

Yes, it has been a long journey. A two year journey... We threw away the book and are BUYING LOCAL.

As many of you know, this year will be our first Christmas with our daughter. Thank you for all your kind wishes. We will be spending the holidays at home in Santa Fe.

How to Pick Antique Prints?

Picking an antique print should not be difficult. In our opinion Antique Prints are subject oriented and you need to use your brain to pick the piece that fits you best. Original art on the other hand is impulsive, it needs to talk to you, we like to think it is where you use your heart. (For artwork see our article on How to Choose Artwork.)

Here are some tips for picking the perfect original old print for you:

1. Identify your interests.

Look through the categories on offer. When our customers visit us at an antique show or through our website they have many categories to choose from. Look through the titles of categories that spark an interest. You love your garden, then look for the Botanical prints category. You studied architecture in College and loved it, then look for the Architectural Prints category.

2. Determine your project.

This is where you determine what you are going to do with the antique print. Is it a gift for your husband, child, friend, or even better yourself? You have an empty space on the wall you wish to fill with old vintage prints? You need to decorate the office, living-room, bedroom?

3. Establish the plan.

You have a project, now you need to decide how much space you want to fill on that wall or how many gifts you need to get. Write it down so you can focus on your goal, you are about to dig in and hunt for the perfect antique print!

4. Dig in!

Let's say that your identified interest was Botanical Prints. You have located the category. You have determined that your project is going to be a wedding gift and your plan is to get six of them. Now you have to find the best antique prints. Start looking through what is on offer. Every time you see a fine botanical print, write down the reference number or pull it aside. You are looking for six pieces, pull out or choose 12 to 15 of your favorite antique botanical prints.

Round Top is a small town of 77 inhabitants in between Austin and Houston, Texas. Round Top explodes with excitement twice a year with the largest set of antique shows in North America in the fall and again in the spring.

There are several antique shows taking place around the town of Round Top, the best are south and north of town.

Our favorites antique shows in Round Top, Texas are:

There are many other antique show venues spread out over miles and often are a mix between collectibles and a glorified garage sale. If you stick to our choices you will not be disappointed. Drop by our booth if you would like other suggestions.

Another thing to keep in mind is that each show venue has different hours and opening dates, but most are open during what is called "antique week". All shows are open on the last Thursday, Friday and Saturday listed on our schedule for Round Top, but beware it gets VERY busy then. Many of our customers come and shop the week before.

When is Round Top? Fall 2011

The Round Top, Texas antique shows take place in the spring and in the fall every year. Many of the venues are spread out and have various dates, however most are open during what is called "Antique Week".

This Fall 2011 "Antique Week" will be from the Saturday 24th September to the 1st of October 2011.

Many shows are open starting as early as the Saturday 17th September and everything is pretty much closed with dealers packing out Sunday 2nd of October.

If you would like to shop for old maps, antique prints and the largest selection of its' kind of original art you can come and shop with us at Blue Hills we will be open from Monday 19 September to the 1st of October inclusive.

Where is the best of Round Top? There is a multitude of antique dealers from around the USA and some from abroad that offer any antique imaginable, so it is hard to know where to start.

Antique dealers are set up at various venues around this small town for close to 2 full weeks. Each venue has different opening hours and some have entry fees. My wife and I have been antique map and art dealers at different Round Top antique shows for over 10 years now. What is Round Top? It's a town in Texas of only a population of 77 people stuck between Austin and Houston, Texas that is invaded twice a year by one of the largest antique fairs in the world! We are back in Santa Fe enjoying the wonderful August weather and getting the new original art pieces that we found in Nice, Berlin and Paris this past May and June ready.

Beaver Creek Colorado Art and Antique Show

Up through the gates we go and cool down near the open air ice rink. Beaver Creek sure is an amazing place to have an Art and Antique show and that is why we come back year after year. This is our 10th year in Beaver Creek and we intend to celebrate it with you by bringing an outstanding assortment of original art from Europe, old maps and vintage prints from the 22nd to the 24th of July 2011.
Rain or shine, Natasha and I will be under our white tent ready to offer you anything from a 500 year old print to some outlandish modern art from France. We do have quite a bit of choice and that is one reason why people come back faithfully every year to buy from us. We will ship for you so don't hesitate to come up and get a gift or two from us.

Sun Valley Antique Show

We are back for another great outdoor antique show in Ketchum, Idaho on the 1st of July to the 4th of July 2011. Natasha and David Deighton will have their tent full of old maps, antique prints and original art at Forest Service Park on Washington and 1st Avenue in Ketchum.
Since the 4th of July falls on a Monday we will be exceptionally open for an extra day making this summer show a four day show. We will be bringing old vintage maps of Idaho and maps concerning Lewis and Clark and the Rockies. Among our antique prints are vintage prints of fish, fishing and wild life, as well as 50 other topics to decorate your home or for a gift. Also there is over 500 original piece of artwork from Europe with loads of interesting themes. There are no reproductions in our booth, everything is original. By the way we ship too, so you don't have to.

Even though David and I are hardly ever awake past 10pm during Round Top, there are several places that cater to the party crowd, who have much more stamina than we do.

Where can I get WIFI while I'm at Round Top?

Being out here in the middle of the rolling green hills of Round Top, TX is beautiful, and now there are options for getting WIFI.

Many people connect through their accommodation, and that would be the best bet, as the places below can get busy at peak times, meaning a very slow connection.

The Lounge at Marburger Farm has WIFI, and encourages all Bloggers to sit down and write about the show whilst you are there.

If you need a computer the Round Top Family Library on the Round Top square has a couple of computer terminals. Donations are welcome, but not necessary.

Where should I stay when I come to Round Top?

My advice is to book accommodation as early as possible. Many of the best places are pre-booked 6 months in advance.

Brenham, TX has several of the big chain hotels, such as Comfort Inn, La Quinta, Holiday Inn Express. Hampton Inn, Best Western, and Roadway Inn.

If you don't mind the drive there are oodles of options in Houston (1 1/2 hour drive) and Austin (1 1/2 hour drive).

Are you an antiques dealer? You can often park your rv at the show. Note that very few shows have sewage facilities, just water and electricity hook ups. Always ask exactly what "full hook ups" includes, you may find it is a hose, 15 Amps of electricity and some grass. I have seen some RVs having their black water pumped by local septic services. Otherwise you will need to drive to one of the local RV parks to use their dump for a fee.

Marburger Farm Opens Today at 10am

Marburger Farm at Round Top, TX opens this morning at 10am for early buying ($25 entry). Regular show hours start at 2pm - 7pm tomorrow, then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturday 9am - 4pm ($10 entry).

What should I bring to Round Top, TX?

When you are planning your first trip to Round Top, here are some things to consider before you pack your car.

What time of year is it?
The Spring show tends to be cooler, and can be pretty chilly - walking around in the rain with a cold wind and 45 degree temperatures will require a good warm coat, and maybe some hot chocolate to keep the spirits up. On the other hand yesterday (March 26th) it was 90 degrees and we were all wishing that it was just a bit cooler.
The Fall show is always hot. Wear comfortable and cool clothing. Always bring a hat and wear sunscreen - there will be a lot of walking outside in the sun.
I come prepared for all weather, from 40 degrees and wind to 95 degrees with high humidity. And bring several layers of clothing, it can be cool when you start your antiques shopping at 9am, but hot, hot, hot by 2pm.

Will it rain?
If you come for the full two weeks of Round Top Antiques Week then the answer is yes, it will rain. If you are just coming out for the day, then probably not. It can get muddy in these fields - rubber boots would be a good foot ware choice after a day or two of rain.

Are you looking to buy small items, or big pieces of furniture?
If you are looking for small antique items, then a cart with big wheels can be useful, as you can often find yourself quite a walk from your car when you find that perfect piece. Most dealers will give you bubble wrap if you purchase something fragile, but why not come prepared, and keep some in the car, just in case?
Furniture is a whole different ball game. If you have a big SUV or truck, it is amazing how much you can fit in the back and on the roof rack. You might also consider renting a trailer (make sure that your vehicle is rated to carry a trailer and that you have the right hitch and electricity connections installed). There are also several companies you will deliver furniture to you for a fee, such as:

If you are planning on having pieces shipped, call the shipping company as early as possible. They get booked up by the end of the show.
Some dealers may also deliver if you are local, or on their route home.

What will I be doing in Round Top?
This may seem like an obvious question, but what you will be doing most is walking, so bring very comfortable shoes. High heels do not work out here - most shows are in fields, there is very little smooth concrete.

Is Round Top a good place for children?
While everywhere is certainly child friendly, the heat, walking and shopping can easily get boring for young folks. You will find it easier to shop if you can come without the kids. Having said that, with some adaptions Round Top Antiques Week can be fun for the whole family. Just maybe with fewer shopping hours than you might like.

What about dogs?
Dogs are welcome in most shows. Remember to let them drink lots of water and to keep them on a leash. Please clean up after your dog.

Will there be anything to eat?
There are lots of places to eat, but it is a good idea to bring some snacks to have in the car if you can't find something to eat. Cold drinks are also good to keep in a cooler. Some people also bring stronger beverages to sip in the afternoons and evenings.

Will my cell phone work whilst I'm at Round Top?

The quick answer is "Yes, most of the time".
The longer answer is "It depends when and where you are".
Verizon and AT&T are working well right now as I write this. Problem day is always the Tuesday morning of Marburger. But, this year we were amazed to find that AT&T now has 3G in Round Top. Hopefully this will mean that the Tuesday morning of Marburger doesn't find all iphone owners desperately trying to get a text message through, as nobody can make a voice call. Verizon caught on several years ago that there are a lot of people out here in Round Top, and did something so that for four weeks a year the thousands of people out shopping for antiques were able to make a phone call. Fingers crossed that this year AT&T has done a similar fix.
If you cannot get a call through, keep trying, or try sending a text message. Often a text will get through while a voice call will not. If the call can wait, try calling after about 5pm - don't ask me why, but it seems easier to get calls through in the evening.

Many people ask us "where should we eat when we come to Round Top?".
There is an almost bewildering choice from small "shacks" to gourmet restaurants.
I have to admit that when we are doing Round Top, we don't get to eat out as much as we would like to. Our Blue Hills at Round Top location stays open until 8pm most nights of Antique Week, which means that by the time we close up all David and I are ready for is a shower and sleep! If you are coming to Round Top from the Big City (well, most towns qualify as the Big City in comparison with Round Top's population) remember that restaurants close early here - best to find somewhere to eat before 8pm.

Original French Manuscripts from the reign of The Sun King Louis 14th

A manuscript is a recording of information that has been created manually by a person, for example a hand-written letter, instead of being printed, or reproduced in any other way. The word manuscript comes from the Medieval Latin word manuscriptum, which was first seen in 1594. Manuscripts do not just contain words, they can contain mathematical calculations, maps or illustrations.

Illuminated manuscripts have pictures, an elaborately embellished initial letter or even full-page illustrations.

Calligraphy (from the Greek kallos or beauty and graphe or writing) is sometimes called the art of fancy lettering, and all manuscripts are wonderful examples of this graphic art.

By the mid-1700's, there were special schools established to teach handwriting techniques, or penmanship. Master penmen were employed to copy official documents such as land deeds, birth and marriage certificates, military commissions and other legal documents.

Timothy Matlack was commissioned to write the final copy of the Declaration of Independence, and Jacob Shallus penned the final copy of the Constitution of the United States of America.

2010 has been a great year. We have had the opportunity to travel to 11 different states and to meet literally thousands of people. We feel honored to have met each and every one of you.

We were going over some of the pictures that I took this year and a couple of them really stood out to us.

They are all showing people making big decisions about their art work choices. It takes time and effort to choose exactly what will work for you and all these people went home with the perfect piece for them. Weather at Round Top Antique Fair

It is sunny today and a bit windy. I would bring a light wind breaker.

The dirt parking lot of our venue has dried up. So no mud here so far. Rubber boots are always a smart idea though.

I'm an antique print and map dealer selling from under a covered venue and today I've been wearing a sweater. I am out of the wind, but in the shade. Tomorrow, Friday it is expected to be 85F and this week-end promises to be outstanding. So, come on down and visit.

Our subscribers might be wondering why we are always talking about Blue Hills when there are many other venues during the Round Top antique fair. The truth is that it is truely an under rated show that needs to be known more. We have exhibited at different locations around Round Top and few are as easy going and as convenient as Blue Hills.

Now, don't get us wrong the Original Round Top Antique Fair at the Big Red Barn and Marburger Farms are fabulous venues that should not be missed, but they only go on for 4 days and 5 days respectively. Blue Hills goes on for longer (20 March-3 April, 2010) We actually exhibit in Tent F at Marburger Farms and we hope you all come down and visit us there. Marburger Farms is in our opinion a must, and if you don't want to pay to go in remember that we will refund your entry if you buy something in our booth there (Tent F, booth Fc2).

Blue Hills offers a different low key shopping experience with quality dealers. Next to us for example is David and Martha Purnell with Brocante who import directly from France a beautiful selection of french furnishings, and I should know because I am originally from Paris, France. Another favorite dealer is Brian from Ski Country Antiques from Colorado.

At Blue Hills you will find ample parking, clean flushing toilets (this is important, believe me), a great setting at the restaurant on a great porch and all the dealers are set up under hard roofed buildings offering shopping in the shade or out of the rain.

Where does one buy prints at Round Top? Well you can buy a lot of reproductions but do be careful. "Repros" are a rip-off as they are only worth a few cents to produce, the authentic document, book page, drawing, painting, etching, signed engraving, map, collectors card, manuscript or old advertizing has at least some financial value. Buying a real original should be the pursuit of anyone that loves their home.

There are only a handful of reputable dealers at Round Top. Dick Bossler, with Prints with a Past is a very good dealer for example. I am sure he would say the same about us.

When is Round Top?

When is Round Top Antique show? This is a question we get quite often. Round Top happens twice a year in the Fall and the Spring. The show is promoted for what is called Antique Week, but this can be misleading as many venues at Round Top are open a week earlier.

This Spring Round Top is going on from Saturday 20 of March to Saturday 3rd of April. There are a whole bunch of different venues to shop for antiques, some open early nearer the 20th of March and the shows are in full swing with the opening of Marburger Farms Tuesday 30 March, then the Big Red Barn on Wednesday 31 March. This is the core of the event at Round Top Texas. By Sunday 4 April everyone is packing up with many antique dealers already gone and on their way home.

During Round Top we sell antique maps, prints and original works of art at two of the best locations of all the shows. Natasha and David have finally set up their 800 square feet booth at Blue Hills at Round Top. It took us 3 days to put it all together and we are proud to say that it looks GREAT! In all there are over 6000 maps, prints and original art works on display. This makes it the largest and most extensive print inventory for sale of all the Round Top venues.

We divided up our very large booth into 3 sections. The first contains antique prints with botanicals, birds, natural history, landscapes and more.

The second section is our favorite as is contains one of the best and grandest selection of original art works on paper in America. Here you will find art work from hundreds of artists from the 18th century to today, all different subjects from fashion, nudes, modern art, folk art, architectural designs, signed etchings and engraving and a multitude of watercolors among other things.

The third section is all about antique maps. Here you will see maps of all parts of the world and of course maps of TEXAS. There are even original maps of the Republic of Texas (1836-1845). They are not reproductions, but true original documents of that period. This is something that is not to be missed!

We have arrived to set up at one of our booths at Round Top, Texas. It is pouring rain and the fields are muddy, but this could be blessing as it will settle the dust. Good weather is on the way, so we are expecting a fabulous show.

We are setting up at two locations in Round Top. One is Blue Hills, a set of hard roofed barns in a beautiful setting just south of the Big Red Barn. It's free to get in and there is plenty of parking. Here you will find us in the barn near the restaurant (which this year will hold the Methodist Men's BBQ, very good). This is Barn A, which is the best of the Barns with a great selection of European and American Antiques. We are nested in the middle of these with the largest collection of original art and maps to be found in Round Top. We will be ready to receive customers Monday March 22nd, 2010 and are officially open on Wednesday 24th from 10 to 6pm.

Our second booth will be at Marburger Farms in Tent F, from Tuesday March 30th to Saturday April 3rd 2010. This is also considered by many designers and discerning customers as the best tent to shop at Marburger Farms. You have to pay to get into Marburger Farms, but David will gift you the entry fee if you buy something in his booth (Location: Tent F, booth FC2). So don't hesitate to shop Marburger Farms.

How to Clean Plexiglass Frames

When your frame needs to be cleaned please follow these instructions.

1. Lay an old towel on your work counter.
2. Take the frame off the wall and lay it on the towel picture side up.
3. Blow off any dust and then wipe with a soft damp (not wet) cloth. For fingerprints use a weak solution of dish detergent and water.
4. Gently dry the plexiglas with a clean soft cloth to avoid water marks
5. When scratches are present, use a plastic cleaner such as Novus or Brillianize to remove scuffs. Always spray the product on the soft clean cloth and not directly on the frame.
6. Never use Windex, any product containing ammonia, or your fingers on Plexiglas, as this will scratch it.

Vail, Lionshead Village, Colorado Antique Show

Just back from our exploratory tour of Panama and off we go to Vail, Colorado to exhibit and sell antique Maps, Works of Art on Paper and antique Prints in Lionshead Village from Friday 21 august to Sunday 23 August.

We will be setting up our booth on the Thursday 20th and we should be ready by early that afternoon. We are bringing over 1000 antique maps of the Americas and the World dating back from 1542 to the 19th century.

We have prepared a great deal of antique maps of US states and cities. Some of my favorites are the maps of the independent Republic of Texas.

Not to be missed are the Caribbean maps, most of which are from the 1700s.
In the art section there will be over 3000 pieces of original watercolors, oils, etchings and engravings. All on paper of course, and all authentic and unique.

Don't miss out on the fabulous selection of fashion sketches from some big names in french Haute Couture.

Some people may wonder where our shop is in Santa Fe. When participating in a an antique show we are often asked where our shop or gallery is in Santa Fe. I like to answer:"You are in our gallery right now" even though we may be in Vail, Colorado.

The fact is that our business, Antique Maps and Works on Paper, participates in Antique shows and has always avoided the immobility of a shop or gallery. In this way we can offer a greater variety of maps, works of art and prints to a wider audience. We have maps of Indiana when in Indiana, Texas when in Texas and maps from all over the world when exhibiting at the resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, Sun Valley or Jackson Hole. And it's great to be in the Rockies in the summer or Texas in the fall.
